Sage advice from C.S. Lewis and Seth Godin

Given the current state of the financial markets and given that I work with people and their money I’ve been doing a fair amount of reflection. We design clients’ investments for the long-term and with quality so their lifestyles are protected. But when the market has lost its ability to recognize value, I for one have started to wonder, “what’s going on?”

Over the last 24 hours something has shifted. I seem to be getting the message “stop worrying and focus on what motivates you.”

Why do I say that?

Well, last night I watched the movie “Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.” It’s based on the book written by C.S. Lewis. And, when I say watched, I was only half watching as I tidied the house, folded laundry and got ready for Monday morning. But clear as a bell ringing, I heard the message at the end of the film …

“And all at once everybody realized that there was nothing to be afraid of and never had been. They blinked their eyes and looked about them. The brightness of [...] grime or scum. And then first one, and then another, began laughing. “I reckon we’ve made pretty good fools of ourselves,” said Rynelf.”

Doesn’t that sound like “stop worrying?”

Then this morning, I read Seth Godin’s new blog post “Run your own race.” And I quote; Self motivation is and always will be the most important form of motivation. Driving with your eyes on the rear view mirror is exhausting. And I agree. Getting up and looking at what the markets did yesterday, looking in the rear view mirror, is exhausting.

So today, with C.S. Lewis and Seth Godin as voices of reason, I’m going to stop worrying and focus on what motivates me. What about you?
